Design Process:Handy Birdy

Design Process of Handy Birdy & Minny Birdy Based on Dialogue with Diverse Users

handy birdyIn 1994, we started the design development with 22 users who had different hand sizes, grip strengths, or disabilities. Over a period of two years through to the final process, we verified the designs with a total of 230 users.

1.Research on resting hand shapes. Verify the conditions of hands with no grip strength 2.Collection of hand position samples of diverse users Identify hand positions when holding something using weak grip strength 3.Creating the basic design based on the research 4.Testing and verification of the first model with diverse users 5.Designing a structure endurable for heavy use, and a mechanism for refill replacement 6.Testing and verification with users to improve the cap shape. Pursue a cap shape that can be removed and replaced using only one hand. 7.Consideration of dominant hands Design a left-handed version in addition to the right-handed version 8.Verification and improvement of the package. Adopt environmentally friendly materials and designs for easier opening 9.Development of size variations. Add the size variations for small hands and children 10.Research aimed at easier and smoother operation. Identify shapes for easier gripping and smoother operation 11.Making mock-ups and verifying them with diverse users 12.Final decision on the design 13.Enhancements born from dialogue with users:Creation of symmetric model, Safe and easy-to-carry strap, Improvement of the insertion part of the cap, Storage stand
